monologue: whiplash

This project is a visualized monologue from the movie Whiplash, capturing the protagonist’s rapid breakup with his girlfriend and his intense passion for drumming. Inspired by Whiplash movie posters, I used a spotlight motif to highlight the climactic final sentences, emphasizing the main character’s passion, ambition, and rage. Through bolding, italics, and pops of red, I conveyed the monologue’s fast-paced, emotional tone—annoyance, resentment, and pessimism. I opted for a muted blue background to avoid distraction and used sans-serif fonts (Avenir Next, Source Sans Variable, Trade Gothic) to reflect the film’s modern, cold aesthetic. Careful attention was given to text alignment, grid placement, and pacing to mirror the protagonist’s hurried delivery, especially in the animation.
